The library found in a bottle
For thirty years, we've been hearing about how trash, thrown to the oceans, accumulates from everywhere into far places, long away from any lands of men and angels. What few people know, however, are the finer hydrodynamics of messages in bottles. The words in them, more htan the paper, ink, or bottles, slightly deform the water around them, so that all bottled messages follow a different track from those of bottles filled with ship models or empty air, from those with spittle and soda, bottles with urine sample or champagne wine, with motor oil or mineral water.
The track they follow leads to a spot in the Sea of Arabia (or in the Bay of Bengal - definitely near India), where there's a small island, with many miles of coral reefs surrounding it. They tread, as if guided by a pilot, the choral reefs without breaking, to land, from all over the world, at the sandy beach. In the island, an old djinnyah, a castaway from something more than a ship, has made it her duty to collect and organize all the bottled messages, and does so with the help of monkfish and of the tiny creatures that dwell in the choral. Bottles themselves make wonderful shelves, especially since the djinnyah (who doesn't have to open them in order to know what's written inside), seals their mouths with gum arabica and smokeless fire.
If you ever land there, say hi to the djinnyah for me. Mind that you don't ask to read any of the messages, though many of them are well worth reading - castaways have much time on their hands, and most of them are rather less practical than Mr Crusoe. See, she considers it a sin for the sons of Adam to read what was written at the behest of the Ocean Sea, and she might do to you what she did to me.

Dream of the Thief
You are alone, in a very small room. You knew how small the room was already, because there's no way of knowing it, in the pitch darkness, the motionless air. Not entirely motionless, because you can hear a very soft breath, close to you. Making you not-alone. An infinitely soft breath, which you keep thinking to be your imagination; stopping your own breathing doesn't help, because it is softer than the noise blood makes while rushing through your ears.
After a long, long while - though not quite so long as to let you cease worrying - the thief speaks. What he speaks, you do not know, save that it is meant to be reassuring, that it is a shy apology. His voice is almost as soft as his breath, and his movements are entirely soundless. Not cat-like, for even the ragged suede of an alley-cat's paw makes some sound, and the thief makes none.
He comes closer - his voice sounds closer in the black, motionless dark. Close enough that you think you should feel his breath on your breast as he keeps asking you to forgive him for being so disappointing. You don't feel his breath, though, and neither do you feel the scalpel until it has gone very deep in your breast, severing your heart from its home. As he takes your heart and walks away, over the great glops and wheezes of your sucking veins you hear him cry a small cry - of shame? when his own heart falls out and, as if that cry summoned it, the moon floods your room.
By the molten moonlight, before the final blackness comes you see the thief is very small, and a bit broken.

Eres alta y delgada
como tu madre,
morena salada,
como tu madre;
bendita sea la rama
que al tronco sale,
morena salada,
que al tronco sale.
Toda la noche estoy,
niña, pensando en ti;
y de amores me muero
desde que te vi,
morena, salada,
desde que te vi.
Te quiero siempre,
alta y delgada
morena salada,
solo para mi
y para mi solo,
solo quiero a ti.
She walks in beauty like the night
My love is like a different night
Of summer climes and cloudless skies
She's plastic, electric, her body fantastic
And all that's fair of dark and bright
And when her impish eyes are bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes
They make me frolic all erotic

Hoje

As mercadorias seguiam.
Os ventos, dispersos na alma do tempo,
traziam as novas das terras longínquas.
Segredavam-se em noites e dias
a todos os homens
em todos os mares
e em todos os portos
num destino comum.
Os navios chegavam ao porto
e partiam...

III/IV
